  • From Charlie on King for the Day

If I were King for a Day, I would fill the prisons with social justice warriors and foul-mouthed Hollywood celebrity malcontents who threaten the President of the U.S. on a daily basis. I once went to the old Albuquerque Airport, at the height of the Vietnam War, to protest Richard Nixon’s arrival. Once the doors of Air Force One opened, all I could see was the President. I realized that it didn’t matter who was the President at the time; I had respect and awe for the office of the President. There was no protest from me, only a great appreciation that I could see my President “in-person” and in”living color”. What happened to supporting our elected leaders, whether we voted for them or not?

  • From Charlie on Mickey's New Employee

I hate the kiosks. Sharon and I encountered one in Maui, when we were looking for a dinner that wouldn’t cost us $50 (or more) at the tourist traps. I fiddled with the damnable machine for a few minutes, without results. Sharon, being more patient and more technologically advanced than her Luddite husband, solved the mysteries of the machine and we got our dinners. However, there were no views of the ocean, no girls in bikinis, no waiters asking if our dinners were delicious. The customers seemed satisfied though. One couple played a card game at their table and at another, small, quiet children were enjoying their night out with mom and dad. Instead of candles at our tables, our food was illuminated by harsh fluorescent lights, exposing all of our physical flaws. Still, the fact that the food was a lot cheaper than at the hotel we stayed at made the evening a success. Thank God our dinner wasn’t dependent on my skills navigating the kiosk. May it rot in Hell.

These clouds look a little like what Berta called buttermilk clouds, but not quite! Lol. Maybe they are a cloud seeding experiment?

Always good to revisit the ranch. Your Grandfather and our Aunt made it a great place to be in the summer. They were very kind. Lots of memories on the creek. We didn’t catch much but it is still peaceful around the water. Thanks for stopping by Scotttreks.

  • From on Snail and Tortoise

Major Tom (the turtle) is a star! Tom does take some chances when he shares the same yard with the mule deer. He pretends he’s a rock when the deer arrive on the scene and their curiosity, many times, leads to the deer tapping at his shell or poking their noses at him, trying to coax Tom out for a visit.

    • From Scott Lafon on Snail and Tortoise

There is much to be said for staying in your living room when Rome burns…..Having a mule deer step on your roof would not give you much sense of security.

appears to me from hikes around here that these kids eat good, are well cared for, and are doing pretty good. can’t say that for lots of the kids that aren’t here. do know that there are lots of children’s homes in Haiti but this one is among the best.

they go through a lot of food down here and it isn’t cheap. Costs on these islands are high for a great many reasons. feeding forty to fifty people three meals a day is pretty staggering.
