Wow, what a timely post….20 minutes ago I talked with HB and reminded him to check out your travel blog….that you were in Belize, not the tourists resorts Belize…but the real Belize! Have you seen or heard anything down there about robberies, stickups, kidnapping of Americans etc.? What about drug cartels? That is one reason I am reticent about going back to Mexico! Much like the USA…when the rule of law goes….so goes civilization!

    • From Scott Lafon on Reality Cuts to the Chase

Ambergris Caye, where I am, is a tourist destination. The people have been very nice and I have not felt unsafe. There is much of beauty here. If you are thinking of moving here though it makes sense to see the good and the bad sides so you can make the right choice for you. Belize City is reputed to be a rough area and there are even areas in San Pedro Town that should be avoided at night. As a tourist you enjoy the good things in a place and then go home. As a resident you have to work with bad things as well.

Well said I think! I never felt unsafe in Mexico..but I was also very aware and tried not to put myself in unsafe situations! Of course…like you…going to bed when the rest of the town was just getting started helped!

What? Kids have to eat at Ruby’s Cafe? No free breakfast…..no free lunch…or no free summer snak/pak program to keep them going? LOL Incidentally, the school up in Wichita that was hosting the VB tournament I went to….Newman University…is also a Catholic school, and I was very impressed by their campus and athletic program! Just sayin’!

Did you do a sax audition for live music night? As an entertainer, you might get tips; bet you don’t for sweeping and mopping. Who does the math on the golf cart rental rates? 1) Eight hours is $42.50, ten hours is $47.50.That’s $5.00 for two hours or $2.50 per hour. At $2.50 an hour, a full 24-hour day would cost $60.00 versus their $67.50 rate. 2) An extra day costs $79.00; 24 hours costs $67.50! What am I missing here?
    2015/11/08 at 9:07 pm
    • From Scott Lafon on Roadhouse

this place is consistently inconsistent..i think the cart rates are whatever they want when they need the money. i still need practice time to get my music good. need to go out in a boat and play long notes. best thing is no snow here!

I actually saw a popsicle truck today…at walmart…and the driver was unloading a bunch of confections from his cart to the truck! I’d like to think that must mean he was an independent guy, who owned the truck and the business? But I guess it could also mean he was just the driver making an hourly wage…..and the owner of the business could buy their Popsicles cheaper at Walmart than anywhere else? Walmart is definitely a blessing and a curse on American small businesses, and I only regret that I didn’t invest 10,000.00 in their stock about 30 years ago!

Enjoyed your latest posts! Didn’t realise winrock was now on hospice care? I remember when it first went in and we could ride our bikes through the arroyo over toward the junior high school next door….what was it called? In my senior moment I have forgotten? Did you ever go there? It seems to me maybe you went to that school for a year? Maybe before the infamous Van Buren where I remember mom driving us up to register and we witnessed a rock fight as we drove up! Lol

Hi alan – winrock is getting a makeover but not sure how they will do. coronado is just down the street and still doing well. winrock got hurt because some of the stores renting there went under – Borders books etc. I thought some developer would do well to buy the land and build upscale loft apartments.

Was that Wilson Jr. High? Or was in Monroe…..that named finally leaped into my demented memory banks? Lol Some president or other? Didn’t you go there for one year before we moved to the Van Buren district? I always more recently have found it humorous that Charley was an asst. Principal at VB…given your history there! What a pit that was….and probably still is! From the rock fight it went downhill from there! With one exception….I remember a gòod friend of mine from those days…..a chap named Ronald King who was an army brat and probably used to sticking up for himself….was goaded into a fight with a Felix Herrera who rode our bus….and Ron handed me his jacket before the fight……when he then proceeded to absolutely clean Felix’s clock! None of Felix’s Tijeras canyon buddies came to his rescue….much to my relief….and my friend Ron came and got his jacket….and had no more trouble with Mr. Hererra! Lol. I wonder what ever became of Ron? I remember we did a few hikes up into Embudo canyon….and I think I might have had him over once or twice to spend the night at 803, …..but my memory is vague at this point! (
