  • From Pat Riley on Piriapolis Rambla

Scott love the winged lion (griffin) statue from the front of the Argentina Hotel. Griffins have always been my favorite heraldic symbol. The earliest griffins (Greek) had the body, tail and back legs of a lion and the head, wings and talons (as its front feet) of an eagle. The eagle’s head, though, had lion ears. Later griffins (primarily English versions) became more lion-like dropping the eagle’s head and sometimes the talons. Yours is a late English variation and is almost identical to the paired griffin statues in the old ornate Fox Theatre in Detroit

The houses are cool! I especially liked the two with thatched roofs. They looked like they belonged in “Lord of the Ring” or similar.

I love all your beach photos. The thing that stands out to me everywhere, the beach, the docks, the races, the area sidewalks is the lack of people. You mentioned that it gets busier in December but this looks like a true joy right now.

Glad to see your new posts. I was concerned you’d run into a wi-fi problem. Loved the seals!

It’s really nice being able read your posts then see the pics that you’ve taken and have written about! Btw, this travel blog is really easy to use and very friendly to its users. Even the spell check feature works almost flawlessly…..and the musical accompaniment sure sets the mood for foreign adventure! I don’t need to travel to these far flung places when I can just stay at home in below freezing temperatures and read about your trip! Lol. Keep it up….you’re saving me a lot of money!

  • From alan on Rooftops and Playa

Wow, that bus really looked nice! And only $11.00….a person should just fly into a country like you did and then take the buses around from town to town. Have you done any checking once you arrive to see if there are any nice cheap hotels to stay in rather than ones the tourists frequent? It’s only supposed to get up to 20 degrees here in Canyon today, and tonight they’re predicting a low of 9 degrees! Hijole! I need to get out of here! LOL Oh yes….it’s snowing now and beginning to stick! Ugghhh!!!

Scott…that pic #2 reminded me a bit of our South Padre Island sojourn last winter! But I like this new place you’ve landed! Open….light…..beaches…..and most important…..palm trees! How much was that place for sale in your pic? Maybe we ought to go in and buy a place? Of course San Carlos would have some big advantages…we will see! I have noticed that you keep referring to South Beach! Is that your gold standard for tropical properties? Lol

  • From Pat Riley on Pencil Museo/Ruta 1

You’ve definitely one-upped me here; I’ve never been to a pencil museum! You should have contributed a pencil. Then they could have updated their sign from 5 May 2010 to 13 November 2014 and their count from 11,856 to 11,857. Just a thought.

Scott, look at the store sign at the top of photo #2 and tell me what they sell there???

  • From Pat Riley on Grocery Shopping at the Frog

Scott, I’ve particularly enjoyed this and a couple of other posts where you discuss local pricing. I’d just assumed you were going from the U.S. to a semi-third-world country where everything was “half price”. I find it most interesting that this is not the case. I bet wages there are lower than in the U.S. leaving your “how to the poor make it” question unanswered???

Wow you’ve been writing up a storm….when do you find the time? Sounds like you can move around town easily using public transportation which should keep costs down. Had any more problems with your hot water heater?

LOL, why am I not surprised that you can just sleep on the couch? Your digs look pretty upscale and hopefully now you have your hot water situation worked out? I’m looking forward to your resort….. Punta del este …..experience upcoming! That sounds like something I would enjoy!

Nice piece about the art show….did you just stumble on it or did Jesper invite you to the show? You seem to fit right in……hand your camera to some people and let them take your pic occasionally!

  • From Pat Riley on Pocitos-Frisbee

With the high rises this looks like it was shot somewhere along Florida’s Eastern Gold Coast (except there would be more people in Florida).

That open air market looked great! The fruits and vegetables all looked very fresh too. Are there supermarkets in Uraquay….like we have in the states?

  • From alan on Fishing in the Rio Plata

Reminds me of our visit to South Padre Island where all the fishermen lined the bay catching rock fish and who knows what else! At least your fishermen had clear weather and not the dense fog we experienced at Padre!

  • From alan on Tourista Sightseeing Bus/Port of Montevideo

I love the palm trees and the beaches! And your comment about the kids liking their pictures taken was so true….I remember years ago when I went to Spain and numerous times took pictures of young Spanish kids who posed for my camera and were very friendly!

  • From alan on Don Timoteo

Wow, what a great video you took! Having video is so much nicer and says so much more than a still picture. Those costumes were amazing and I liked the way the “director” danced around and at least appeared to be leading the group sometimes! LOL You think these performers are professionals or do this just for fun when they are not working at their usual jobs?

It’s about the same temperature here and wet and rainy too today! Post some pics of your apartment and places you’ve found to eat….and I even enjoy seeing pics of the food you’re being served. Are there lots of restaurants in your neighborhood?
